About the team
The Service Frameworks team is responsible for empowering teams across Stripe with primitives, abstractions and interfaces to build highly reliable and performant services. As Stripe continues to scale in its product portfolio and users, this team is at the core of ensuring product teams are able to ship faster with improved developer velocity while ensuring the services behind the scenes are well architected and have guaranteed reliability, scalability and performance.
What you’ll do
You'll play a pivotal role in shaping technical strategy, collaborating closely with engineering management to drive roadmaps and strategic initiatives to level up service-based architecture at Stripe. While influencing high-level direction, you'll remain deeply engaged in hands-on problem-solving, tackling complex challenges that push the boundaries of our service frameworks.
Responsibilities
- Collaborate closely with infrastructure and product engineering teams to align service framework development with broader organizational goals.
- Anticipate Stripe’s needs in the future and design the next generation of scalable, high-performance service frameworks and SDKs in Ruby, Java to empower developers across Stripe.
- Lead the development of practical, useful, and reliable tools, processes, and architectural patterns that enhance developer productivity and service reliability.
- Champion and build out best practices for service-based architecture to ensure high availability and performance at scale.
- Mentor junior engineers and lead initiatives to improve operational excellence, fostering a culture of continuous improvement.
- Architect and implement solutions for complex, cross-cutting concerns such as async processing, monitoring, and deployment automation.
- Contribute to technical decision-making at a high level, influencing the direction of Stripe's service architecture and development practices

Minimum requirements
- A Bachelor's degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science or related field plus 10 years of experience
- Experience working across different parts of the software stack (at least 2): networking, service configuration / deployments, API development, monitoring, code generation tools
- Experience building and operating infrastructure and tools that empower developers/product teams to deliver business value
- Experience leading and creating strong technical teams that balance operational excellence, collaboration and user needs
- Experience with operational excellence and a deep understanding of metrics, alarms and dashboards
Preferred qualifications
- Experience designing and architecting high-level systems and distributed systems
- Experience collaborating across engineering teams within an organization
- Ability to quickly learn and work with systems agnostic of programming languages
- Experience handling critical incidents for production systems
- Prior experience building SOA Tooling
The annual US base salary range for this role is $209,800 - $314,800. For sales roles, the range provided is the role’s On Target Earnings ("OTE") range, meaning that the range includes both the sales commissions/sales bonuses target and annual base salary for the role. This salary range may be inclusive of several career levels at Stripe and will be narrowed during the interview process based on a number of factors, including the candidate’s experience, qualifications, and location. Applicants interested in this role and who are not located in the US may request the annual salary range for their location during the interview process.
