We are seeking a customer-obsessed Principal Product Designer to lead the transition of our products to an AI-first experience. This role requires a visionary who can conceptualize and execute innovative designs, all while making complex user interactions feel like magic.
At Flatfile, we design products that help simplify the complex and unpredictable world of onboarding data. We have already set the standard for what a good data exchange experience feels like, and this unique role blends systems thinking, care of craft, and frontier thinking as we apply AI into a relatively nascent business application space. Join us to be at the forefront of this transformative journey.
This role reports to: Jon Bell, VP of Product
This role may be listed at other companies as:
• Staff Product Designer
• Principal Product Designer
• Lead Product Designer
Why are we hiring for this role now?
As Flatfile evolves to an AI-first product experience, this role will ensure our product experience is at the bleeding edge of technology and user interaction. This strategic role will greatly influence our product direction and company goals, making it one of the most impactful positions within our team.
You will play a crucial role in shaping how a $2T industry thinks about the intersection of data operations and AI. Your opportunity is to craft an experience that feels fluid, human, and delightful.
While there is no such thing as an average day at Flatfile, you’ll routinely be involved in deep dives into user behaviors, crafting new design patterns, interaction modalities, and HCI philosophies.
In this role, you can expect to:
- Deeply understand user goals and communicate these needs across the team.
- Create intuitive interfaces and collaborate on testing and feedback iterations with your peers.
- Develop user personas and scenarios to evaluate design efficacy and drive future improvements.
- Work with other designers and engineers to see projects from inception to completion.
- Source feedback from users and team members to inform design decisions
If this sounds like a fun challenge, let’s define the Data Exchange category together!
Consider applying if:
- You have a proven track record of creating innovative designs in tech-focused environments.
- You possess excellent visual design skills and can prototype rapidly but carefully in Figma.
- Your approach to design is data-informed, leveraging user feedback and analytics to guide your decisions.
- You are a self-starter who can influence teams and stakeholders without direct authority.
While many Product Designer roles are similar, Flatfile’s Designer roles are unique. With that in mind, you should pass on applying if:
- You refrain from engaging in or find it challenging to handle debates about the future state of products; we need someone who can have an opinion yet remain open-minded.
- You would prefer to avoid challenging the status quo or pushing the boundaries of technical possibilities, as this role demands continuous learning and adaptation to new technologies.
- You lack attention to detail or do not value the craftsmanship of design.
- You don’t want to decide on the best-paved road to build for Flatfile and expect a lead or manager to make the final call on what that is.
- You’ve never worked in a fast-paced environment. We move quickly. And a lot of places say that, but trust us, we really do. If you’re one who gets frustrated when priorities change rapidly, we’re not the place for you.
What tools will you use?
- Primary tools include Figma for design tasks, with an openness to incorporating Generative AI tools.
- Familiarity with React is a bonus but not required. Your expertise should focus on leveraging design tools to their fullest potential.
